Report: Tracy Chapman suing Nicki Minaj for illegal sampling

Republic ecordsTracy Chapman is reportedly suing Nicki Minaj for sampling one of her songs without permission.

TMZ reports that Chapman has filed a lawsuit charging that Nicki illegally sampled “Baby Can I Hold You” from Chapman’s 1988 self-titled debut album for the song “Sorry” featuring Nas.

The four-time Grammy award winning singer says that Nicki made multiple requests to license the song in June, and she denied her requests. “Sorry” was released in August. 

As previously reported, in July, Nicki commented that she was waiting to clear a Tracy Chapman sample, and surveyed fans on Twitter if she should wait to clear the track and drop the album on August 17,
